Our mission

Animal Rescue, Veterinary Care, Adoptions & Foster Homes

Halfway Home Animal Shelter is a volunteer-based non-profit based in Playa Matapalo, Guanacaste, Costa Rica. We provide timely rescue, veterinary care, and shelter to wildlife, domestic, and livestock animals that have been abused, injured, or abandoned—and we work to give every rescue a path back to health and a loving home.

We operate with the intent to give our rescues the support to adjust back to their natural habitat or find placement in a new home with adequate care. Halfway Home began because so many homeless and abused animals were brought to the local clinic that overcrowding reached crisis levels—and something had to change.

Today we're run entirely by volunteers and supported by donors and partners who believe every animal deserves a second chance.

Thoughtful care

Health and healing are part of every path home

Rescue work is strongest when shelter, veterinary care, foster homes, volunteers, and adopters move together around the needs of each animal.

From rescue to forever home

We respond when an animal is injured, abused, abandoned, or has nowhere safe to go. Each rescue receives veterinary care, a secure place to recover, and an individual path toward release, foster care, or adoption.

Veterinary care with Hospital Cavallini

Hospital Cavallini is our trusted medical partner in Villarreal. Their team provides rescue treatment, spay and neuter care, vaccinations, and weekly check-ups at the shelter.

Rescue & veterinary care

We provide timely rescue, shelter, medication, vaccinations, rehabilitation, and follow-up care for wildlife, domestic animals, and livestock.

Spay & neuter campaigns

Low-cost and free clinics reduce the number of animals born onto the streets and prevent suffering before it starts.

Education & community

School visits, community workshops, and practical guidance help families understand responsible animal care and humane population control.

Reforestation & recycling

Our environmental work protects the natural habitat that wildlife and the wider Guanacaste community depend on.

How to adopt

Meet the animals and submit an adoption application. Our team reviews the fit, talks through the animal’s needs, and helps coordinate a safe handoff—including international travel when needed.
